Mentoring for Discipleship

Why this course?

Almost everyone of us can name one or two people who were very significant influences in our early discipleship. If we stop and consider how they exercised that influence, we will learn that there are many ways to do so.

There are intentional steps and values which we can learn based on Rev Dr John Mallison's book "Mentoring to develop Disciples and Leaders".

Based on this book the course will bring practical encouragment and step by step processes. It will find the mentor in you, the skills you already have and the ways in which you can leave a lasting legacy in the life of another.

Anne Yarham is the dean for this course.

November 13th Mentoring Workshop

with Rev Dr John Mallison

As an internationally known Christian educator, John Mallison is a specialist in enabling mainly Christian leaders to develop personally and spiritually, and in equipping them for service.

His broad parish ministry in Australia spanned 17 years full-time in rural, industrial, developing urban areas and part-time in an experimental inner-city parish. A healthy balance between education, evangelism and social concern was characteristic of this innovative ministry. He has been Moderator of the NSW synod.

For 14 years he was in full-time Christian education during which he was State Youth Director and Director of Adult Education for the Uniting Church in NSW. He founded and directed the U.C.A. lay training centre , the ELM Centre now in Parramatta.

Since 1986 he has directed his own Christian leadership development organisation, John Mallison Ministries serving all sections of the Christian Church both nationally and internationally. Mentoring, equipping others to mentor, teaching and the preparation of leadership resources are the main thrusts of this ministry.

He has made a major contribution to the Small Group Movement across Australia, writing the first book on Christian small groups in Australia. He has enabled the development nationally of small group trainers and facilitators through his writings, educational events and coaching. He founded the Australian Small Group Network.

For 8 years, until 2002, John was the National Director for Mentoring for the Australian Arrow Leadership Program.
A prolific writer, his 23 books deal with mentoring, the role of small groups in Christian community, Christian life-style development, pastoral care, evangelism and nurture of new disciples. His latest best selling book, Mentoring to Develop Disciples and Leaders has a UK edition, and Polish and Cambodian translations. Australia’s leading bookstores have rated it amongst their ten best selling books on Christian leadership.

John’s popular training manual to equip small group leaders, The Small Group Leader, (a revision and expansion of Growing Christians in Small Groups) has been widely used internationally, with special editions / translations in UK, France, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Malaysia, India, Korea and Indonesia.

He has special skills and wide experience in cross-cultural ministry, having conducted leadership training events in 29 countries.
John’s involvement in service to the community has included the founding of both the Port Kembla Blue Nursing Service and the Newcastle Youth Service and membership of numerous community movements. He has been National Chair of LinC for 12 years, an agency of World Vision, enabling non-professional carers serve the needy throughout their local communities.

He has been awarded the Order of Australia Medal for services to the community.

He has a Doctorate of Theology from the Australian College of Theology.

He says his great supporters are his wife June and his family. He believes that the secret of his ministry is the grace of God, the health and opportunities God has given him and the power of prayer.
